The following tips aren’t really secrets. Most of them are simple, common sense things that should be done in order to be successful in accomplishing our goals.

What makes these following tips a secret is that they are rarely a part of an action plan for our goals.

“A goals’ action plan?”

“What’s that?”

“Are you saying that when I declare a resolution/goal, I have to make an action plan to accomplish the goal?”

“Yes!”

“So, when I decide on a goal, I can’t go about my life as usual without implement some type of action plan to achieve that goal?”

The answer is simply, “No!”

Let’s be honest, when we decide on resolutions/goals, rarely do we go any further than making a declaration. That’s one of the main reasons why we aren’t success in achieving some of our goals.

There needs to be a commitment.

There needs to be plan.

If you say so

Remember these quotes:

“A Goal without a Plan is just a Wish” and

“If you Fail to Plan, You Plan to Fail.”

Your Life With Goals

If you want to find any success in your life, you need to set goals. Without having goals for yourself, you will lack focus and direction. Not only do goals allow you to take control of your life, but they also provide you with the benchmarks for determining your success, and they give your life purpose.

Setting a goal is the process that begins with you carefully considering what you want to achieve and ends with you putting in the hard work to achieve it.

Sssh!

Now, here are five secrets of goal setting that will set you up for success.

Set Goals that Motivate You

If you have limited interest in the outcome of your goals, or they are irrelevant to the bigger picture, your motivation to work on achieving them will be low. Set goals related to the high priorities in your life. It requires a commitment to achieve your goals, so to ensure you achieve success, you need to set specific goals that motivate you.

Set SMART Goals

For your goals to be powerful, they need to be SMART. To increase your chances of success, your goals need to be:

  • Specific which means that your goal needs to be spelled out very precisely. Using language that leaves no doubt as to what the goal is, why you want to achieve the goal, and how you will get there is very important. If you are not able to be detailed in your description of the goal, it will be hard to meet it. Take the time to do this part right.
  • Measurable which means that you should be able to use this as a metric for which to determine success. If your goal can’t be quantified, then it’s not a full goal and you won’t know how to tell when you’ve succeeded. An example of a measurable goal is something like: “I want to add 100 dollars per week of income to our bank by writing five 500-word articles each week for a life coach.”
  • Attainable which includes being actionable, assignable or achievable. The preference to really get something good done is to make your goal actionable, meaning something where you can do something for each day that will eventually result in an accomplished goal. Goals should also be achievable or you will only get frustrated. Be accurate about the time it takes to reach a goal, and what actions it takes to get there. Also, know who will be responsible for doing it.
  • Relevant or realistic. Either or both are important and are true when comes to setting your goals. If you want your goal to succeed, it should most certainly be something that is realistic or you will fail. It should also be relevant to your life’s vision and match with your values.
  • Time Bound which refers to the “T” in the S.M.A.R.T. acronym. Time-bound, timely or trackable are all  important parts of the goal creating and setting process. If you don’t set a time limit and you can’t track what is happening, your goal will be hard to quantified or show as achieved.

Write Down Your Goals

When you physically write down your goal, it becomes real and tangible. It eliminates any chance that you will forget about it. Be sure to frame your goal statement positively to help increase the rate of retention. Post your goals someplace where you will see them every day as a constant reminder of what you want to achieve.

Make an Action Plan

Often, we get so focused on the outcome of our goals, that we forget to create a plan of action for accomplishing them. Take the time to write down the individual steps that you will need to take to achieve your goals. As you complete each level, cross it off so you can visually see the progress that you are making.

Stick with It

Goal setting is an ongoing activity, not merely a means to an end. Keep yourself on track by creating reminders, and schedule regular blocks of time to sit down and review your goals and progress. You want to make sure that the relevance, necessity, and value remain high as you work toward accomplishing your goals.

Hopefully, you realize that setting goals is more than merely saying you want something to happen. To find success, you need to clearly define exactly what you want, design a plan, and put in the work. If you implement these secret tips, watch how your goals will become a reality right before your eyes.
